Lygia Clark
Brazilian artist Lygia Clark’s Espaço Modulado (Modulated Space) (1958) is comprised of a monochromatic modular composition consisting of positive and negative planes, and reflects a moment in Clark’s practice as she moved away from the representational to the sensorial.
Biography
Lygia Clark was born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. She studied with Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, and then with Isaac Dobrinsky, Fernand Léger and Árpád Szenes in Paris from 1950 to 1952. Her exhibitions include the São Paulo Biennale (1959); the Venice Biennale (1960); Documenta (1997); Tropicália: a Revolution in Brazilian Culture, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2005); Lygia Clark: the Abandonment of Art 1948–1988, Museum of Modern Art, New York (2014); and Lygia Clark: Painting as an Experimental Field, 1948–1958, Guggenheim Bilbao (2020).
